What Impact Has Social Media Truly Had On Society

However, aside from seeing your friends’ new baby on Facebook, or reading about Justin Bieber’s latest brush with the law on Twitter, what are some of the real impacts, both positive and negative, that social media has had on our society?
Here is a closer look at the effect of social media on politics, business, socialization as well as some of the negative effects such as cyber bullying and privacy.
Impact on Politics
Every politician worth his salt needs to jump on the social media bandwagon. This is because social websites have played an important role in many elections around the world, including in the U.S., Iran, and India. They have also served to rally people for a cause, and have inspired mass movements and political unrests in many countries.
Impact on Business
Net savvy companies are using social media to advertise their products, build customer loyalty and many other functions. Interactions and feedback from customers help businesses to understand the market, and fine-tune their products and strategies. Many firms organize contests and give away prizes to enthuse consumers to visit their social website page more often. Compared to television advertisements and other expensive forms of marketing, social media presence is a cheap and effective means to enhance brand image and popularity.
Effect on Socialization
Social networks offer the opportunity for people to re-connect with their old friends and acquaintances, make new friends, trade ideas, share content and pictures, and many other activities. Users can stay abreast of the latest global and local developments, and participate in campaigns and activities of their choice. Professionals use social media sites like LinkedIn to enhance their career and business prospects. Students can collaborate with their peers to improve their academic proficiency and communication skills. You can learn about different cultures and societies by connecting with people in other countries.
Negative Effects of Social Media
Unfortunately, there are a few downsides too to social networking. Many introverts and socially reclusive users place too much emphasis on virtual interaction, and ignore the real world outside. Read on to learn about a few more negative repercussions of social media.
Cyber Bullying and Online Harassment
If you are not careful, unscrupulous people can target you for cyber bullying and harassment on social sites. School children, young girls, and women can fall prey to online attacks which can create tension and distress. If you are a victim of cyber bullying, do not take it lying down, but try to take appropriate legal action against the attacker.
Impact on Productivity
Many companies have blocked social networks on their office Internet as addicted employees can distract themselves on such sites, instead of focusing on work. In fact, studies show that British companies have lost billions of dollars per year in productivity because of social media addiction among employees.
Impact on Privacy
If you are not careful, what you post on the Net can come back to haunt you. Revealing personal information on social sites can make users vulnerable to crimes like identity theft, stalking, etc. Many companies perform a background check on the Internet before hiring an employee. If a prospective employee has posted something embarrassing on social media, it can drastically affect their chances of getting the job. The same holds true for our relationships too, as our loved ones and friends may get to know if we post something undesirable on social networks.
Conclusion
Social media has its advantages and drawbacks as revealed in this article. It is up to each user to use social sites wisely to enhance their professional and social life, and exercise caution to ensure they do not fall victim to online dangers.

Threat Of North Korea Nuclear Attack ‘Accelerating’, US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis Warns

The threat of nuclear attack from North Korea is increasing, US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis said on Saturday.

During a trip to North Korea, Mattis said that the the US would never accept the state as a nuclear power, adding that any use of military weapons would result in a “massive military response” from the White House.

Mattis has been at pains during his week-long trip to Asia to stress that diplomacy is America’s preferred course as tensions between Washington and Pyongyang remain high

Mattis warned Pyongyang that its military was no match for the US-South Korean alliance, and that diplomacy was most effective “when backed by credible military force.”

“North Korea has accelerated the threat that it poses to its neighbours and the world through its illegal and unnecessary missile and nuclear weapons programs,” he said, according to the Associated Press.

“I cannot imagine a condition under which the United States would accept North Korea as a nuclear power,” Mattis added.

“Make no mistake – any attack on the United States, or our allies, will be defeated. And any use of nuclear weapons by the North will be met with a massive military response that is both effective and overwhelming,” Mattis said.

Mattis’s South Korean counterpart, Defense Minister Song Young-moo, dismissed the idea of deploying tactical nuclear weapons to the peninsula as a response to the North’s advances.

But the US-Korean alliance had the ability to respond, even in the event of a nuclear attack from the North, Song added.

Tension between North Korea and the United States has been building after a series of nuclear and missile tests by Pyongyang, as well as a series of heated exchanges between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and President Donald Trump.

The CIA has said North Korea could be only months away from developing the ability to hit the United States with nuclear weapons, a scenario Trump has vowed to prevent.

Mattis said that Kim’s behaviour had left no room to imagine accepting Pyongyang’s nuclear status.

Trump leaves for his first trip as president to Asia next week, which will include a stop in South Korea to meet President Moon Jae-in.

On Friday the UK’s security minister blamed North Korea for the huge cyber attack on the NHS, after a report blamed the Government for failing to properly prepare for it.

Ben Wallace told The Today Programme he “quite strongly” believed the Kim regime was behind the attack, as he agreed with the National Audit Office’s (NAO) conclusion that it could have been avoided if the NHS had taken “basic” security precautions.

Negative effects of facebook on teens

maxresdefault

Teens who use Facebook frequently may become narcissistic. “inordinate fascination with oneself; excessive self-love; vanity.” Most likely these are the character traits acquired by heavy use of Facebook
Teens who have a strong Facebook presence may display psychological disorders, such as anti-social behaviors, and mania & aggressive tendencies. An anti-social child often does not consider the effects their actions have on others. This can be quite dangerous, especially during the already-volatile teen years. Perhaps this should be termed the anti social media effect.
The Facebook effect is real, but teens who “overdose” on technology daily, and this includes video games, have higher absence record from school and are more likely to get stomach aches, have sleep issues, and feel more anxious and depressed.
In addition Middle and high school students, who checked their Facebook once during a certain study time had lower test grades. Perhaps this is similar to being a distracted driver.
Those students who checked their Facebook most often also had the lowest rates of reading retention. We should find away to raise their awareness about such problems so it can be eliminated and save their future.

the future generation

The new social environment and it’s all parts such as social life, communication, military control and the new world culture constructed and will be changed constantly in the future by the digital nation who waste plenty of his time on social media and playing the game.
Digital age who born with the revolution of technology has been damaged by losing parents control up on these children until they became addicted. Addiction of anything, of course, has big damage on our health, especially on our brains. While we are eating we using our phones, e-mailing or using a computer which makes us focus on many things in same time.
Games that our kids being addicted to using has the big influence on the behaviours and reactions. Violence and killing game such as “call of duty” and other games effect harmfully on our ideas and behaviours upon other people that could lead to bad consequences in the future because these kids will be the new society and this society member many of them may be in the position of control in the future. For example, if we take 20 kid and divide them into two groups one of these groups playing violence games and another group Playing other non-violence game then we bring these two groups together and see how they behave in this small Society group then we will understand the big harm on behaviours of these kids.
Finally, we need to protect our new social environment from the new harm part of the technology to control the damage in the future. However, technology has a lot of benefits in many aspects of life.

We Have to Adapt to Technology

Professors James Paul Gee and Henry Jenkins, both experts on new media and its impact on youth and culture, stress that the same event in human history keeps happening in different contexts. “There are always gains and losses, since every new technology giveth and taketh away something simultaneously” We are suffering from loss of memory capability after writing and print came on the scene because we no longer need to remember long stories or some other not vitally important information. However, is that a net loss for society? Jenkin notes, concerns about technology is not a new issue, yet humans have survived and adapted over time.

We are living in a completely different world -to a certain extent- compared to our previous generations. With the help of the internet, we are able to reach infinite information and knowledge. More discoveries are being made, technological developments are faster than ever and in result new professions are emerging. All these new developments that came along with the information technology are enabling us more things to do, more places to be at and a lot more to learn. However, there are still 24 hours in a day. In this case being multitasking is becoming more of a necessity than being a choice for some people in order to fit their preoccupations to the limited time they have. We have to adapt to the innovations that come into our lives in order to keep pace with technology and to become more of a part of the information society.

Change and adaptation are longstanding phenomenon’s. It’s true that this process is not easy all the time but it is inevitable. I think people will adapt to new techniques and methodologies for being able to do multitasking more efficiently. It is not just the adaptation of mind but the evolution of human body too. Our body continues evaluating with every new challenge to survive. We should have more faith in the human being, stop alienating technology and become a part of the change.
